Domestic Violence Awareness Month 2022
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. We will host and participate in a number of events throughout the month, raising awareness and empowering and engaging communities to end domestic violence. We hope to see you out in the community!

9/26: 20th Annual March of the Brides
During this event that happens across the country every September 26, women wear wedding dresses or all white, and men dress in black in solidarity, for the memory of Gladys Ricart, a Dominican immigrant who was murdered on her wedding day by her estranged boyfriend in New Jersey. The March honors all victims and survivors of domestic violence, and provides information to those who may need local services. Jeanne Geiger Crisis Center is honored attend the Lawrence, Mass. Brides’ March with Delamano, Inc. and YWCA of Northeastern Massachusetts.
10/2: Walk Against Domestic Violence
The Jeanne Geiger Crisis Center is thrilled to be back in-person again this year for our 31st Annual Walk Against Domestic Violence. Walk with us as we advocate for change and raise awareness for domestic violence. Proceeds from this event allow us to continue to provide an extensive array of programs and services to 16 local communities.
10/4-10/5: Montana Crime Prevention Conference
The Geiger Institute team will present at the Montana Crime Prevention Conference on the Domestic Violence High Risk Team (DVHRT) model, and how it leverages the predictability of intimate partner homicides by incorporating research-based risk assessment into a community’s domestic violence response system to identify the most dangerous cases.
10/8: Women’s March
The mission of Women’s March is to harness the political power of diverse women and their communities to create transformative social change. Women’s March is a women-led movement providing intersectional education on a diverse range of issues and creating entry points for new grassroots activists & organizers to engage in their local communities through outreach programs and events. Women’s March is committed to dismantling systems of oppression through nonviolent resistance and building inclusive structures guided by self-determination, dignity and respect.

10/10: Indigenous’ Peoples Day
Indigenous Peoples’ Day honors the histories, cultures, and perspectives of Indigenous peoples and their ancestors who lived on the land now known as North America. They existed in these areas thousands of years before the first European explorers arrived.

10/11: International Day of the Girl
International Day of the Girl is a global celebration of girls, their innate power, and ability to enact change. Today, we raise up their voices and their vision for what an equitable society looks like, what it means to achieve equity, and the change they can make as the new generation of strong, smart, bold leaders.

10/15: Charity Ride Against Violence
Seabrook, NH’s American Legion Riders Chapter 70 will host its first annual Charity Ride Against Violence benefitting Jeanne Geiger Crisis Center and The Jennifer Kalicki Angel Fund.
10/17-10/21: #Every1KnowsSome1 Week of Action
This year, the National Network to End Domestic Violence’s focus for Domestic Violence Awareness Month is #Every1KnowsSome1. The campaign strives to highlight how common domestic violence is and that it is more than physical violence.

Wear purple to show your support for survivors and your commitment to ending violence.
10/24-10/28: Trial Courts’ Cultural Appreciation Week
Cultural Appreciation Week is the Massachusetts Trial Courts signature event in promoting equal access to justice for all in a safe and dignified environment with policies and practices that strengthen and support diversity, equity and inclusion. Stay tuned for more details on local events.
11/3: Documentary Screening: AND SO I STAYED
AND SO I STAYED is an award-winning documentary by Natalie Pattillo and Daniel A. Nelson about survivors of abuse fighting for their lives and spending years behind bars. Save the date for this special event at The Screening Room in Newburyport.
