May 2020: Girls of the Month
Each month, we feature a different girl from Girls Inc. of the Seacoast Area, a program of the Jeanne Geiger Crisis Center and an affiliate of Girls Incorporated®, a national research, education and direct advocacy organization that inspires girls to be strong, smart, and bold. This month, we are featuring Sienna, Brooke and Sydney!
About Sienna: Sienna is 11 years old and finishing sixth grade at Nock Middle School. She has been a member of Girls Inc. for two years. From her very first week in the program, Sienna has participated in activities with a great attitude. She is always including others and wanting to try new things. Sienna is an active participant in weekly Girls Inc. Zoom meetings, and we love seeing her smiling face every week! She enjoys hanging out with her friends, riding horses, playing soccer and doing STEAM activities in Girls Inc. We asked Sienna a few questions so you can get to know her better:
What have you been doing while you’ve been at home?
I have been doing lots of schoolwork, but we just opened our pool so I will be able to go swimming soon! I like to stay active with my family and I have also been doing a lot of cooking and baking! I made frozen cookie bars and they were sooo good!
What are you looking forward to?
I cannot wait to go horseback riding again and to play soccer! My family has also talked about going to Beaches Resort and I am really hoping we get to go because I am excited!
How has Girls Inc. helped while you’ve been at home?
I have been able to see my friends and talk to girls I do not get to see all the time. It is really fun and not stressful because we do not have homework and can just have fun!
Girls Inc. inspires all girls to be strong, smart, and bold, through programming and advocacy. We asked Sienna how she feels she encompasses these three important qualities:
How are you strong? I am strong because I am getting through this quarantine. I am also strong because I have played soccer for 8 years and horseback riding for 2 years!
How are you smart? I am smart because I get good grades and make healthy choices. My family eats paleo and it is really delicious and fun to make new recipes!
How are you bold? I am bold because I am confident in my choices.

About Sydney: Sydney is 10 years old and in fourth grade at River Valley Charter School. Although this is Sydney’s first year of Girls Inc., she already embodies what it is to be strong, smart and bold. Sydney was the 2nd place fundraising winner for the Girls Rock! event and has attended almost every Zoom meeting during the past few months. During the weekly meetings at River Valley Charter School, Sydney loved the cooking/healthy living program and STEAM activities. Sydney is an energetic and creative girl that anyone can be friends with! She is always finding new friends to join Girls Inc., and she puts a smile on our faces every week! Here is what Sydney had to say:
What have you been doing while you’ve been at home?
I have been doing schoolwork, playing virtually with my friends, going swimming in the lake, and making milkshakes and homemade cookies.
What are you looking forward to?
I want to have a super big sleepover with my friends!! I also want to go back to school and go back to Girls Inc!
How has Girls Inc. helped while you’ve been at home?
It gave me something to look forward to after a hard day at school. It helps me connect with my friends, and to stay connected to people that are harder to contact because some people don’t have phones or are difficult to reach.
Girls Inc. inspires all girls to be strong, smart, and bold, through programming and advocacy. We asked Sydney how she feels she encompasses these three important qualities:
How are you strong? I am a really strong swimmer and I also like horseback riding. I came in 2nd place in my swim meet and I have gone to a few horseback-riding camps on a farm in Maine!
How are you smart? I am good at area and perimeter in math, and I love getting people involved in different activities and making good choices.
How are you bold? I look out for my friends or people who are getting bullied and make sure they are okay even if I am not there on time to help them right away.
