Programs

We currently offer school-based Girls Inc. programs for girls in the following Massachusetts towns: Amesbury, Georgetown, Groveland, Haverhill, Ipswich, Lawrence, Merrimac, Newbury, Newburyport, Rowley, Salisbury and West Newbury.

Summer programs and occasional pop-up programs are open to all girls in the North Shore area, and are often based in Newburyport. Links to sign up for those programs, when available, will be featured on this page.

The following school-based programs are implemented throughout the year:

Girls Inc. Healthy Living

Girls today face a broad range of challenges to their physical, mental, social, and emotional health: increased anxiety, too little physical activity; media and cultural messages overemphasizing the importance of physical appearance; and unrealistic expectations and pressures from a variety of sources (including family, teachers, and peers).

These challenges and the unhealthy strategies that girls too often adopt to address or cope with them can prevent girls from reaching their full potential. Through Girls Inc. Healthy Living, girls increase their knowledge on what it means to live and sustain a healthy lifestyle. Girls will participate in activities that will be focused on physical activity, body image, nutrition, stress management and self-care.

Girls Inc. Economic Literacy®

Girls learn to manage money, invest, and begin to develop an appreciation for global economics. Girls explore how the economy affects us locally and globally, developing skills needed to be economically self-sufficient.

Girls Inc. Project BOLD®

Girls learn to lead safer lives by developing skills and strategies for self-defense, including physical techniques. Girls also learn how to seek out and talk to caring adults about personal violence, and to advocate against gender-specific violence.

Girls Inc. Media Literacy®

Girls increase their awareness of the scope and power of the media and the effects of marketing and media messages on girls and women. With interactive, hands-on projects and discussions, preconceived notions of who and what girls are, based on ever-present media messages, are dissected and reevaluated. Girls gain confidence and become more aware of the power of media. Girls learn how to keep themselves safe while using social media sites.

Girls Inc. Operation SMART (STEAM)®

Girls Inc. Operation SMART develops girls’ enthusiasm for and skills in science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (STEAM). Through hands-on activities, girls explore, ask questions, persist, and solve problems. By interacting with women and men pursuing STEAM careers, girls come to view these careers as exciting and realistic options for themselves.

Growing Up Strong, Smart and Bold®

Growing Up Strong, Smart and Bold was developed in response to girls’ requests for help with their friendships and adults’ desire for girls to be safer. During this six-week program girls will explore friendship, assertiveness, problem solving and safety through activities and games designed to inspire girls to be strong, smart and bold.

Advisory Group

Advisory Group allows Girls Inc. members to take on a leadership role. Participants meet to discuss needs in their own communities, learn and take part in planning events, learn and practice skills to be a mentor, and train to be co-facilitators.

Volunteer Opportunities

We are committed to helping girls gain the confidence and the skills they need to lead successful, independent, fulfilling lives. Of course, we can’t do so without your help.

One of the most meaningful ways that you can support our efforts is to volunteer your time. From sharing your expertise to participating in our programs, there are a number of ways you can help girls in our community become strong, smart and bold.

Internships and Volunteer Programs include:

Be a career speaker

We are looking for women leaders and entrepreneurs to talk about their careers. We simply ask you to take a few minutes of your time to talk about your career and how you got there, as well as the pros and cons of your job, to give girls an idea of the various career opportunities that are available to them. In preparation, girls will provide questions and you can put together any materials you think they may need to understand what you do and how you run your business.

Co-facilitate a Girls Inc. program

We are seeking interns and volunteers to donate their time – either in separate sessions or during one full day – to facilitate a Girls Inc. orientation or program. We will provide training in advance.

Program Assistance

As our programs continue to be offered in local schools and throughout the community, we can always use your assistance with a specific program such as Healthy Living, Media Literacy, Exploring Entrepreneurial Experiences or STEAM. Interns and volunteers will help prep for programs as well as co-facilitate.

Host a Girls Inc. of the Seacoast Area Awareness/Fundraising Event

We are always looking for innovative events to help us tell our story and inspire members of the community to donate their time, treasure or talent. Interested in hosting an event? Give us a call.

Hear what the girls are saying about Girls Inc. of the Seacoast Area programs:

"We love your programs! Thanks for having this group and empowering our girls! My daughter has come a long way since enrolling in your group."

“I learned and loved everything about STEM. I learned to keep trying and never give up. Almost if not every time I failed the first try, but then after many, many improvements I achieved things I never thought I, an 11-year-old girl, could do. I also learned to work with others and compromise with them. I wish school STEM could be this fun."

“My favorite part about this program is that we get to be who we want to be, we get to say what we want to say, and we get to do what we want to do. We have the freedom to be ourselves and just be girls.”

Advocating on Behalf of All Girls

Driving policies and practices that open doors to girls and ensure equality.

We engage in advocacy that focuses on the needs of girls from low-income communities and girls who face multiple, intersectional challenges such as those based on sex, race, religion, ethnicity, immigration status, disability, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, and gender identity.
